A-List Authors Clegg Hudson McCartney Novey
Writers Whose Works of Literature We All Ought to Read
On this webpage within my website, for my team, I typically include bios of writers, musicians, dancers, artists, translators, students, and colleagues with whom I collaborate--cross-pollinations in artistic synergy and creative symbiosis. This time, however, I am including bios and links for four authors that inspired my upcoming blog post on The Craft of Reading as a means to acknowledge the impact that these authors’ works exerted upon me.
Although I have not worked collaboratively with them, their literary creations pollinated my work in wholeness, as a poet, as a writer, as a teacher, as a scholar, ultimately making me evolve as a human being.
Their choice of words compelled me, their stories inspired me, their narrators elicited empathy in me, their craft made me aware of my own techniques and skills as a writer, their brilliance and commitment to contemporary issues and concerns--the politics of identity, class, gender, justice and resiliency--enlightened my scholarly study of postmodern and contemporary literature. And at least one book by each one of these authors is finding their path into my syllabi and pedagogical curriculum.

Bill Clegg is a literary agent in New York and the author of the bestselling memoirs Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man, and Ninety Days, and the novel Did You Ever Have a Family, which was longlisted by both the National Book Awards and the Man Booker Prize. Clegg’s new novel, The End of the Day new expected release date will be September 29, 2020. Genevieve Hudson is the author of the novel Boys of Alabama to be released on May 2020, the memoir-hybrid A Little in Love with Everyone, and the story collection Pretend We Live Here, which was a 2019 Lambda Literary Award finalist. Their writing has been published in Catapult, McSweeney's, Joyland, No Tokens, Bitch, The Rumpus, and other places. Hudson's work has been supported by the Fulbright Program and artist residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Caldera Arts, and Vermont Studio Center, and currently they are an Affiliate Faculty at Antioch University, Los Angeles.

Alistair McCartney is the author of The Disintegrations: a Novel that won the Publishing Triangle's 2018 Ferro-Grumley Award for LGBTQ Fiction and was named one of the best works of fiction of 2017 by The Seattle Times and Entropy Magazine. His first novel, The End of the World Book was a finalist for the PEN USA Fiction Award 2009 and the Publishing Triangle's Edmund White Debut Fiction Award 2009 and was in Seattle Times Best Ten Books of 2008. McCartney's writing has appeared in 3:AM, Bloom, Lies/Isles, Gertrude, 1913, Jams White Review, The First Time I Heard series, Aroused, and other journals and anthologies. Born in Perth, Western Australia, he lives in Venice, California. He teaches fiction at Antioch University LA's MFA in Creative Writing, where he curates AULA’S Literary Uprising reading series.

Idra Novey is the author of Those Who Knew, an Indie Next Pick and Amazon Best Book of the Month, and Ways to Disappear, winner of the Sami Rohr Prize, the Brooklyn Library Prize for Fiction, and a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for First Fiction. Her fiction and poetry have been translated into ten languages and she's written for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and New York Magazine. She's translated the work of several prominent Brazilian writers, most recently Clarice Lispector's novel The Passion According to G.H. A collection of Idra Novey's co-translations with Ahmad Nadalizadeh of Iranian poet Garous Abdolmalekian, Lean Against this Late Hour released on April 13, 2020, with Penguin Press. She currently teaches fiction at Princeton University.
