Siolo Thompson

Writer and illustrator

Siolo Thompson is a Seattle based writer and illustrator known for her clean, minimalist prose and realistic renderings of the human figure and the natural world. She was born in Apia, Western Samoa and raised in a mishmash of places including Bolivia, Peru, and various American cities, Siolo's unique fiction and illustration work is shaped by her travels and studies.

Siolo Thompson's work has been featured in national and international exhibitions, on book covers, in magazines and literary journals, and can be found in bookstores worldwide. When not working in the studio you can find this eclectic artist roaming around the mountains, swimming in strange bodies of wild water, or maybe in the kitchen whipping up something absurd.

"I first became aware of Cecilia Martinez Gil some years ago, not through direct contact but rather osmotically, through the works of other artists. An illustrator I know (Levi Hastings), had worked with her, someone else spoke of poem of hers that they had read.

In time the circle closed, and my work came in direct contact with hers. In the way of these things, we became artistically intimate. Cecilia contributed to an anthology of collaborative works that I was directing, eventually I had the pleasure of creating images to accompany her work. I visited her in California, and she visited me in Seattle.

The layers of our relationship have dimensions, some of abrupt intimacy and others more distant and diffuse, but all are made, it would seem, of ink. I draw she writes. The tantalizing blank pages of future collaborations are there, waiting to be inked."
